AQL has been commissioned by the City of Ballarat and Andrea Proctor Landscape Architects to project manage the fernery garden at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens.
Opening 9th March 2024.
The site poses challenges with restricted access, protected heritage trees and monuments, and waterlogging from low elevation and nearby Lake Wendouree. AQL focuses on high-quality garden and landscape construction following design details and specifications precisely. Sustainability is incorporated through recycled materials, Australian products, and engaging local businesses where possible.
Earthworks involved grading and stockpiling crushed rock for reuse. Drainage, concrete, and customized steel, stone, and timber structures were meticulously installed. This project utilized recycled materials and sustainably sourced spotted gum timber while paying homage to local heritage and environmentally-conscious practices. A rusting steel boardwalk and edging with gravel paths use permeable materials. Custom soils and irrigation source from Lake Wendouree.
Hanging epiphyte towers and plant chandeliers are a signature viewing point within the fern house structure carefully fixed to the existing structure. The entrance features over 6,400 bluestone pavers with spray seal representing unfurling tree fern fronds. The building of this educational and inspiring garden has utilized our horticultural, landscape construction and design abilities to ensure we achieve the desired outcome and to meet the deadline.
